The equal opportunities and dignity at work policy should begin by outlining the organisation’s goals and commitment to equality and dignity and their aim of promoting an integrated workplace. This should be followed by the areas of discrimination the organisation is opposed to, reflecting the nine equality grounds protected by Irish legislation. Finally, the policy should state the organisation’s aim to provide a work environment that respects the dignity of its members, is free from discrimination, harassment and bullying so that all employees can achieve their full potential, as well as stating specific actions as to how this will be achieved.
The existence of the policy will not protect the organisation, it must be regularly communicated to all employees.
The sample policy on the following pages integrates equality and dignity at work, and incorporates dealing with bullying and harassment. It is followed by additional clauses that you may choose to include, which promote specific actions around disability. A sample charter for dignity at work is also presented.
