Leave is a complex area for organisations to manage. Governed by six significant areas of legislation, employees have statutory entitlements to a number of different types of leave. Each has to be carefully managed in a transparent and consistent way. In most cases, the legislation is highly procedural and detailed records are mandatory.

There are many different types of leave to which an employee may be entitled in the course of employment. Annual leave is an ongoing entitlement, which is there to protect the health and safety of employees, while other types of statutory and non-statutory leave are generally related to individual circumstances. An organisation’s procedures to manage leave, defining entitlements and approval processes should be made very clear to managers and monitored to ensure consistency and equity.
